In the early 1970's the name of the home was changed from the Episcopal Church Home for Children to Hillsides. Hillsides is a nonprofit agency with an 83 year history of service to California's children.
On October 24, 1996 Pasadena florist Jacob Maarse hosted a special dinner at The Jonathan Club in Los Angeles to allow Hillsides to introduce their "Change the Life of a Child" capital development program. I had the honor of being a guest at the occasion, and of being given an opportunity to comment on my own Hillsides experience. You can click here to see the text of that speech.
If you are interested in further exploration in the area of what it's like to grow up in a children's home, I strongly recommend that you read The Home, by Richard McKenzie. It was published in 1996 by the Basic Books division of HarperCollins. You can also visit Professor McKenzie's web site by clicking here . He has a number of interesting articles on his site, including the results of the only study ever made of how children's home alumni have fared in later life. It's very worthwhile reading!
I support Hillsides and urge you to do the same. Please contact me for more information about how you can help.
